Phthalic Anhydride (ortho-xylene) is produced by catalytic oxidation of ortho-xylene. As the anhydride of phthalic acid, phthalic anhydride is white crystalline compound. Because of it’s bifunctional and readily available, PA is an important industrial raw material, especially for the large–scale production of plasticizers for plastics.
Phthalic Anhydride (naphthalene) is produced by catalytic oxidation of naphthalene. As the anhydride of phthalic acid, phthalic anhydride is a toxic, white crystalline compound. Because of it’s bifunctional and readily available, PA is an important industrial chemical, especially for the large–scale production of plasticizers for plastics.
Applications
Phthalic Anhydride Applications
Ortho-xylene process Phthalic Anhydride is the key process for Phthalic Anhydride production.
Bisically, Ortho-xylene process Phthalic Anhydride quality is better than naphthlene process.
Phthalic Anhydride (ortho-xylene) uses are:
1. For phthalate esters plasticizers(mainly DOP);
2. For unsaturated polyester resins (UPR);
3. Used in pharmaceuticals;
4. As recursor to dyestuffs;
5. For PA-based alkyd resins.
Phthalic Anhydride (naphthalene) in mainly produced in China.
Even currently the quality of naphthalene process Phthalic Anhydride is not as good as OX based Phthalic Anhydride, but naphthalene process Phthalic Anhydride is economical for applition for some industries.
